Sancy Suraj, a memory athlete from Singapore, has made waves in the world of memory competitions with his record-breaking feats of memorization. In February 2021, he set a new Singapore record by reciting 1,505 digits of pi, and shortly after, he broke his own record by memorizing 1,119 digits of Euler’s number in just 30 minutes. Suraj also set a new record for the Fastest Time to Identify All National Flags, typing the country names of 197 flags in an online quiz. Can you tell us about your approach to memorizing such a long string of digits in Euler’s number, and how you managed to keep track of them all? 

Certainly, I’d be happy to share my approach to memorizing such a long string of digits in Euler’s number. The first thing I did was break down the number into chunks of 10 digits each. This made it easier for me to remember and visualize each chunk individually. Then, I used a memory palace technique to associate each chunk with a specific location in a familiar place, such as my home or a local park. 

For example, I might associate the first chunk “7182818284” with my front door, and imagine that number written in giant letters on the door. The second chunk “590452353” could be associated with my mailbox, and I might imagine the numbers crawling out of the mailbox and forming a pattern on the ground. 

To keep track of all the chunks, I created a mental map of my memory palace and moved through it systematically, visualizing each location and recalling the associated chunk of digits. I also used a technique called “chunking” to group the digits into meaningful patterns, such as phone numbers or dates, which made them easier to remember. 

Finally, I practiced regularly and reinforced my memory by recalling the digits frequently throughout the day. This helped me to maintain my focus and concentration during the 30-minute recitation and allowed me to recall the digits accurately without getting lost or distracted.

Great question! I trained for this record-breaking memory feat by adopting a rigorous and disciplined practice regimen. My approach involved a combination of mental exercises, physical fitness, and a healthy diet to optimize my cognitive performance and ensure that I was at the top of my game. 

Firstly, I worked on improving my memory techniques by practicing regularly with various memory games and exercises. These included activities like memorizing long strings of digits, names and faces, decks of cards, and even poems or speeches. I also used software and apps designed to enhance memory performance and track my progress over time. 

Secondly, I paid close attention to my physical health and fitness, knowing that physical exercise and a balanced diet can have a significant impact on cognitive function. I made sure to exercise regularly, incorporating activities like running, swimming, and yoga into my routine. Additionally, I focused on eating a healthy and balanced diet, rich in nutrients that support brain health, such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants. 

Finally, I prepared myself mentally and emotionally for the challenge ahead by practicing visualization techniques and mindfulness meditation. I visualized myself successfully completing the memory feat, picturing the environment and the feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. Mindfulness meditation helped me to focus and stay present in the moment, reducing stress and anxiety and enhancing my cognitive performance.

As with any significant challenge, I faced several obstacles along the way to achieving this epic memory record. One of the most significant challenges was maintaining my focus and concentration over an extended period of time. Memorizing a long string of digits requires sustained mental effort and concentration, and it can be easy to get distracted or lose track of the numbers. 

To overcome this challenge, I developed a number of strategies to stay focused and engaged throughout the recitation. These included taking short breaks to rest my mind and refocus my attention, practicing mindfulness and visualization techniques to reduce stress and anxiety, and breaking the number down into smaller, more manageable chunks that were easier to memorize and recall. 

Another challenge I faced was dealing with mental fatigue and burnout. Memorization can be mentally exhausting, and I needed to be careful not to overtax my brain or push myself too hard. To combat this, I made sure to take regular breaks, get enough rest, and engage in other activities that helped me relax and recharge my mental batteries. 

Finally, I had to overcome my own self-doubt and negative self-talk. It can be easy to get discouraged or feel overwhelmed when faced with such a daunting task, and I had to remind myself of my past successes and the progress I had made in my training. I also sought support from family, friends, and mentors who encouraged and motivated me to keep going and stay focused on my goal.

As a passionate memory athlete, I am constantly looking for new challenges and opportunities to push the limits of my memory performance. Currently, I am working on several other memory records and feats, including the memorization of binary digits, playing cards, and random words. 

One of my major goals for the future is to break the world record for memorizing the most digits of Pi. This record is currently held by Akira Haraguchi, who memorized an incredible 100,000 digits of Pi in 2006. While this is certainly a daunting task, I am confident that with enough training and practice, I can make a serious attempt at breaking this record in the future. 

In addition, I am also interested in exploring the applications of memory techniques in other areas, such as education, business, and personal development. I believe that memory training can be a valuable tool for anyone looking to improve their cognitive abilities and enhance their overall performance, and I am excited to continue exploring these possibilities in my future endeavors. 

Overall, my goal as a memory athlete is to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible with the human mind and to inspire others to explore their own cognitive potential through the practice of memory techniques. If you’re interested in pursuing memory competitions or breaking records, my advice would be to start by learning and practicing the foundational memory techniques that are commonly used in these competitions. These techniques include the Method of Loci, the Major System, and the Dominic System, among others. By mastering these techniques and incorporating them into your daily practice routine, you can significantly improve your ability to memorize and recall information. 

In addition to these techniques, I would also recommend developing a consistent practice routine that focuses on both speed and accuracy. Memory competitions are timed events, so it’s important to be able to memorize information quickly and efficiently, while still maintaining a high level of accuracy. By practicing regularly and tracking your progress, you can identify areas of weakness and develop strategies to improve your performance over time. 

Another important aspect of memory training is mental and physical preparation. It’s important to stay mentally focused and alert during competitions, so getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and staying hydrated are all important factors to consider. Additionally, practicing mindfulness and meditation can help to improve focus and concentration, which are critical skills in memory competitions. 

Finally, I would advise aspiring memory athletes to find a supportive community of like-minded individuals who can offer guidance, feedback, and motivation. There are many memory training groups and communities online, and attending memory competitions and workshops can be a great way to connect with others who share your interests and goals.
