What is your approach to memorizing large amounts of information? 

My approach to memorizing large amounts of information is based on a combination of various techniques, such as the method of loci, the journey method, and the major system. These techniques involve visualizing information in a specific order, linking it to a familiar location, and converting it into a memorable image or story. By creating vivid and unusual mental associations, I can retain and recall vast amounts of data accurately and quickly. 

I also believe that practice and repetition are key factors in improving memory skills. I spend a significant amount of time training my mind to remember various types of information, ranging from numbers and words to images and abstract concepts. Through regular practice, I have developed a high level of proficiency in memorization and recall, which allows me to break records in memory competitions. 

Furthermore, I am a strong believer in the power of mindfulness and meditation to enhance cognitive performance. By practicing mindfulness, I am able to focus my attention and reduce distractions, which in turn helps me to improve my memory abilities. I also maintain a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, and getting enough sleep, as these factors can also impact cognitive performance.

Can you share with us some of your most memorable memory feats? 

I have accomplished several memorable memory feats throughout my career. One of my most significant accomplishments was setting the Singapore record for reciting the most digits of pi, which I did by memorizing and reciting 1,505 digits of pi. I also hold several other memory records, including memorizing the most decks of cards in an hour and identifying all elements of the periodic table in just 4 minutes and 19 seconds, as mentioned in the article. 

Another noteworthy achievement was competing in the World Memory Championships in 2019, where I placed 12th in the world and won several medals in various events. One of my most memorable performances was in the historic discipline of Speed Cards, where I was able to memorize a shuffled deck of cards in just 17.68 seconds, breaking the Asian record and placing me among the top card memorizers in the world. 

Aside from these specific feats, I am also proud of the overall progress and growth that I have made as a memory athlete. Over the years, I have improved my ability to remember and recall information, refined my techniques and strategies, and honed my mental skills. Balancing training for memory competitions with other aspects of my life can be challenging, but it is essential to maintain a healthy and well-rounded lifestyle. In addition to my memory training, I prioritize my professional commitments, personal relationships, and hobbies, which all require time and attention. 

To achieve this balance, I follow a structured and organized routine that allows me to make the most of my time. I dedicate specific hours of the day to memory training, which I approach with focus and intensity, but also take breaks to rest and recharge. I also ensure that I get enough sleep and maintain a healthy diet to support my physical and mental health. 

In addition, I have a supportive network of family and friends who understand my passion for memory and help me maintain balance in my life. I also participate in activities outside of memory competitions, such as playing sports, traveling, and volunteering, which help me to stay grounded and maintain perspective.

I believe that several key factors are essential for success in memory competitions. First and foremost, it is essential to have a solid foundation of memory techniques and strategies. This involves mastering techniques such as the method of loci, the journey method, and the major system, which are the building blocks of memorization. 

In addition, having a strong sense of focus, discipline, and mental toughness is crucial. Memory competitions can be mentally and physically exhausting, and it is essential to stay focused and maintain discipline throughout the competition. Mental toughness allows me to stay calm and composed under pressure, which is necessary to achieve peak performance. 

Another key factor is consistency and regular practice. Consistent practice enables me to develop muscle memory and master the techniques that I use to memorize information. Through regular practice, I am able to refine my strategies, identify areas for improvement, and build my confidence in my abilities. 

Finally, having a growth mindset and being open to learning and trying new techniques is critical for success in memory competitions. The field of memory is constantly evolving, and it is essential to stay up-to-date with the latest research and developments in the field. By remaining open-minded and curious, I am able to continue learning and improving my memory skills.

What are some future memory challenges you’re planning to tackle? 

I am always looking for new and exciting memory challenges to tackle. One future memory challenge that I am planning to undertake is to memorize an entire deck of shuffled playing cards as quickly as possible. 

This challenge involves memorizing the order of a deck of 52 playing cards in a matter of seconds. To do this, I will use memory techniques such as the method of loci and the major system to create a mental image for each card and associate it with a specific location in my memory palace. 

Another challenge that I am planning to undertake is to memorize a large number of historical dates and events. This challenge involves not only memorizing the dates and events but also understanding their significance and context. To do this, I will need to develop a deep understanding of historical events and use memory techniques to associate the events with specific images and locations in my memory palace. 

I am also interested in exploring the use of technology in memory competitions. One future challenge that I am considering is to compete in a memory competition using only digital devices, such as a computer or tablet. This would require me to adapt my memory techniques to a digital format and to learn new strategies for memorizing information using digital devices.
